ON HOUSING by Josep Lluís Mateo

The Department of Architecture and Design, American University of Beirut, cordially invites you to a public lecture by Josep Lluís Mateo:

Josep Lluís Mateo has been Professor in the Architecture Department at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich (ETH-Z) since 2002. Mateo was born in Barcelona and graduated in Architecture in 1974 from the ETSAB. He gained his doctorate (cum laude) from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in 1994. Mateo’s practice is based in Barcelona, and he is currently involved in a number of local and international projects such as the new Film Theatre of Catalonia in Barce¬lona, the new headquarters for PGGM Pension Fund Company in Zeist, Holland and the office building on the former site of Renault factories in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris. Other recent work includes a new head office of the Bundesbank in Chemnitz; the Barcelona International Convention Centre; and a 5-star hotel and office block for Forum 2004 in Barcelona. In each of his projects, Mateo seeks to connect the practice of construction with research and development in both intellectual and programmatic terms. He works in the area between the sphere of ideas and the physical world of reality.
Josep Lluís Mateo’s work has been widely exhibited, and MoMA devoted a space to his apartment building in Valencia for the Sociopolis Project in the exhibition, “Spain: On Site” (2006). Mateo was editor-in-chief of the magazine Quaderns d’Arquitectura i Urbanisme from 1981. There are several monographs on his work, and he himself has published widely, most recently as the author of Occasions (Barcelona, 2009) and the editor of Global Housing Projects (Zurich, 2008).
