Jean Boghossian features at the Beirut Exhibition Center his recent works on paper and canvas. They all bear, at different degrees, traces of burnt degradation. These bites draw marks on plain colour surfaces, where the artist let step in chance. But the colour can also conceal work of fire producing a series of perforations of different shapes and sizes. Or, on the opposite, the artist burns directly the painted surface.
Either on the paper or the canvas, fire works relentlessly. Either avaricious or prolix, its effects are definite and irreversible. Here is the reason, it is not only graphic but, above all, physical. This is why, it is not about abstraction, but to rediscover the flesh of paper, of the canvas. It is the artist’s purpose, what he reaches for, his focus.
